Editor’s Desk : Pipes and Tobaccos Magazine

Editor’s Desk

I had the best of intentions for this editorial. I had planned to spend International Pipe Smoking Day driving the streets and byways of my home county pursuing a journalistic quest—a search for pipe smokers in the wild. I had a route all planned, including mall parking lots, smoking areas just outside the jurisdictions of hospitals and large businesses, and even a tobacco shop where cigars reign and pipe smokers are tolerated. I wanted to find a fellow pipe puffer to interview about his approach to our pastime—and to wish him (or, indeed, her) a happy IPSD. Even if it had turned out to be a guy who had smoked the same inexpensive tobacco in the same inexpensive pipe every day of his adult life, that encounter was going to form the basis of this story.

Of course, even the best-intentioned schemes ofttimes come to naught.
