Spontaneous Combustion

“Smoke the hell out of it.” This was the advice given to me when I was just a briar sprout, challenged with an old Charatan Relief Grain bulldog that wasn’t delivering the goods. It’s not that it tasted bad; it didn’t. Though the pipe was fairly old, it hadn’t been smoked much, and it was in nearly pristine condition when I got it, so it certainly hadn’t been abused. Its only problem was that it just didn’t taste like much at all. I was blowing smoke about it at one of our Saturday afternoon gatherings at Drucquer’s when Eric (friend, mentor and fellow backroom fixture) said those very words to me: “Smoke the hell out of it.”
